Academic Programs

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning offers four degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and Planning, a Master of Urban Planning, a Master of Science in Sustainable Urban Management, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Regional Planning. It also offers a Minor in Urban Studies and Planning.

Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and Planning

The mission of the BAUSP program is to provide an excellent liberal arts education and to prepare intellectually grounded students for careers in planning and planning-related fields. More broadly, the BAUSP major aims to prepare entry level professional planners who are also capable of pursuing graduate study in planning and related fields and to growing into leaders in their professions.

Minor in Urban Studies and Planning Overview

The Minor in Urban Studies and Planning introduces students to contemporary issues and factors affecting the development and functioning of cities in the U.S. and worldwide. Urban planning is an interdisciplinary field that applies problem-solving and policy development skills and techniques from the local neighborhood to international and "mega-city" context.

Master of Urban Planning (MUP) Overview

The mission of the MUP program is to prepare students to become leading practitioners in the planning profession. The MUP program seeks to provide students with a deep intellectual grounding in specific knowledge areas and preparation in advanced skills and techniques of planning.

Master of Science in Sustainable Urban Management (MSSUM)

The MSSUM degree provides mid-career professionals with the analytical and strategic skills essential for managing change in urban areas. This program provides urban professionals working in a variety of fields with the necessary knowledge and skills for understanding the multiplicity of inter-related urban systems and crafting the necessary policy interventions that facilitate the creation of sustainable, healthy, safe, and resilient communities.

PhD in Regional Planning Overview

The Ph.D. Program in Regional Planning educates scholars for positions in leading universities and research institutions. It builds a strong foundation of planning and social science theories, advanced research methods and design, and expertise in a chosen specialization.
