Master of Urban Planning Degree

Advising

Students receive academic and career advice from faculty in a variety of ways. In general, students should feel free to seek advice from the faculty member most closely aligned with their professional interests. In addition, several specific means of acquiring faculty guidance include:

Academic Advisor

All students are assigned an academic advisor by the MUP Program Director upon enrollment in the program. Students should seek out their official academic advisors for guidance on course selection, internships, capstone options and proposals, and preparation for the job market. It is quite common for students to change advisors once they are in the program and have more knowledge of their interests and professional goals. To change advisors, students should discuss the switch with their current official advisor, obtain the permission of the new advisor, and inform the MUP Coordinator of the change.

Concentrations

The MUP concentrations are guides for the selection of mix of electives that develop a depth of expertise in one or more subfields of professional practice. Many of the concentration webpages also provide information on professional organizations, career options, and broader University activities and resources relevant to the given field of study and practice.

Assistantship Supervisor

Students with teaching or research assistantships will have a faculty assistantship supervisor (i.e., the faculty member teaching the course or directing the research).

MUP Program Director

The MUP Coordinator, a good general source of advice on program requirements, provides final approval of all internships, capstone projects, and independent study and capstone applications.
