Lewis and Susan Hopkins Planning Fellowship Endowment
As a continuing commitment to planning at Illinois, Susan and Lew Hopkins have contributed $100,000 toward an endowed fellowship.
If the Department raises at least an additional $50,000, the Provost will provide the equivalent income of a second $150,000 endowment.
With the Provost’s match, the Department will be able to fund two fellowships each year for Master of Urban Planning graduate students
(equivalent to the 25% assistantship funding some masters students receive) or one fellowship each year at the level typically provided
to PhD students.
We now have gifts or pledges for an additional $40,000, so
we are still seeking $10,000 to meet the match requirement. We ask that you
contribute to the Hopkins Planning Endowment. Either print
the card and send your gift or pledge
to the University of Illinois Foundation/Hopkins Planning Endowment at address
on the card; or,
donate
online by choosing "Other" and specifying the "Hopkins
Planning Endowment" as the fund.
Since each dollar given to the fund will be matched by one dollar from the Provost’s
Office, this is an unusual opportunity for alumni and friends to leverage their
gifts to support graduate students in planning.
Beginning with Charles Mulford Robinson in 1913, collaborative work among faculty and students at Illinois has earned international
attention in planning. The Hopkins Fellowships will allow the Department to recruit students who are most able to benefit from and contribute to the Illinois planning experience, regardless of ability to pay. Each student fellow will be assigned a faculty member as advisor and
collaborator to ensure the kind of learning, practice, and scholarship that professional master students and PhD students expect from
the University of Illinois.
