The National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education at the University of Maryland and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are working collectively on the project entitled Monitoring Urban Land Markets for Environmental Protection, Transportation Efficiency, Housing Affordability, and Economic Growth. In the first phase of this project the Co-Pis conducted a web-based identification of the availability of GIS data and capacity to monitor various aspects of urban growth and land markets at the metropolitan level. Information was requested nationally from about 400 metropolitan planning organizations and regional planning agencies.
